Works by Phil Barbato

“I love making creatures that bring people joy - ugly, cute, fuzzy, cuddly, bite-size joy in a squishy package they can cherish forever. I work within constraints of my own design (repeatable shapes, fabrics that are easy to work with, manageable sizes) so I can explore relationships in color and texture, and still produce efficiently. I enjoy pushing contrasts, trying new materials, and challenging a gender role or two along the way. My favorite moment is when I flip that new creature right-side out and see it for the first time. When something I've made makes me happy (deep, guttural, warm bubbles happy) and I can't explain exactly why it does, I know I've done it right.”

Phil Barbato currently sells his toys at Quirk Gallery and Etsy

Opens: Friday, September 4th 7PM
Exhibition on display until September 25th

For the past few months, that staff and volunteers at G5 have been debating what to do with the big display cases in the back corner of our store Gallowlilly's. They are very unique and helped create an identity for G5. However we have found them quite limiting, and struggle for new ideas on how use them. (who would have thought we would be struggling for new ideas) After a scrutinizing brainstorming session we decided it would be best to destroy them, I mean nothing gets your brain rolling like letting your aggression out. What has come out of this destruction? I new gallery space perfect for more intimate craft-based art and installations. Come check out the new gallery and it's first exhibit Plushozoic this September 4th.
